The Rubber Room

New York City Public School Teachers facing the possibility of termination or other disciplinary action were not allowed to teach while their cases were pending. Nor were they permitted to stay home. So day after day, dozens of teachers waiting for their day in court were required to report to an empty classroom shared with all the others facing probation. And these rooms came to be referred to as: rubber rooms.

Commissioned by Artistic New Directions as the inaugural project to kick-off their “without a net” series in which a play with a cast of 5 was rehearsed with 5 separate casts who would then rotate in and meet one another in performance.
