Taught by Roland Tec

for Playwrights, Lyricists, Librettists, Actors, Singers, Directors

Are you five revisions in to your opening number and can't for the life of you figure out why it is your composer continues to deliver music that completely misses the point of your lyric? Are you a playwright who's been afraid to take a stab at writing a musical because music has always seemed like such a foreign, complicated and beguiling language?  Are you a librettist currently collaborating with a composer and just not sure how to express yourself about music?  Are you a singer who’s tired of feeling as though each new song has to be spoon fed to you, one note at a time? Well, this class may be just what the doctor ordered.

For anyone with the most basic ability to identify notes on a staff, Music Fundamentals II will expand your ability to sight-read and greatly improve your appreciation for melody, harmony, rhythm and meter.

When I started writing musicals, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I was thrilled when the Dramatists Guild offered Roland Tec’s Music Fundamentals for Writers. Roland makes this online class warm and interesting, but when I was working with a composer on a short opera last week I realized how the foreign language of music is actually seeping in. The humor in a verse wasn’t quite landing. Now I could actually see in the score and better articulate why. I was a playwright who wrote musicals and short operas. Now, thanks to Roland Tec, I’m a librettist.

-Vynnie Meli, playwright, lyricist and librettist

Roland Tec taught his Self-Production Boot Camp to about 40 members of our theatre community, young, old, and mid-career.  It was smart, direct, helpful, and focused on the needs of the students.  I think he's a wonderful man, a great theatre person, who knows what he's talking about, and just incidentally, he's able to bring out even the shyest in the room, so all participate fully.  Can't go wrong with him!

-Julie Jensen, playwright and educator

So much has changed for me since taking Roland Tec's online course in Music Fundamentals. Just the other night, I was at a session recording some of my songs and I was able to ask questions I never could have asked before, including a question about whether a melodic line should resolve to the tonic!  It was really cool to be able to contribute!

-Ed Levy, playwright, lyricist and librettist
